As early as February, the Caldwells follow the sun up the Rio Grande Valley from as far south as Socorro to as far north as Pojoaque selling chile plant starts.

“The chile goes from the plant, to the gunny sac, to the roaster, to the peeler, to the mouth.”-Kathi Caldwell

Donovan Caldwell, 12, in his second season of chile roasting is well on his way to take over the family business. After just one year, he was addicted

“He came home after his first season and made us buy him his own roaster,” said Kathi Caldwell.
Donovan and his brother have started their own garden on a small plot of land next to the family farm. They grow and sell all their vegetables to the farmer’s market down the street from their house. The profits pay for their and their sister’s allowance.

Donovan hopes to walk in his parent’s footsteps and continue with agriculture and the ways of the past.
